Sir John Tomlinson as Baron Ochs in David McVicar's production of Der Rosenkavalier at ENO

Strauss conceived this as his "Mozart opera" and Hofmannsthal's libretto (here in Alfred Kallisch's English translation) tells of aristocratic Viennese intrigue. Octavian (Connolly), the young lover of the Feldmarschallin (Roocroft, in her role debut), becomes embroiled in Baron Ochs' (Tomlinson) attempts to marry Sophie (Sophie Bevan).

Appointed Ochs' "Knight of the Rose," Octavian presents Sophie with a silver rose and falls in love with her himself. Meanwhile Ochs' roving hands have found Octavian in disguise as the Marschellin's servant, but that gives Octavian an idea as to how to sort everything out...
